Top Things To Do On Public Holidays

Public holidays are an absolute saving grace when it comes to breaking up the hectic work or school week. Generally, they’ll fall on a Monday or Friday which only means one thing: long weekend! Those 2 words are powerful enough to bring a smile to even the downest of Debbies.

Public holidays can be a great opportunity to get out and about to do things you wouldn’t normally do over your regular 2 day weekends. However, as this extra time off is such a luxury, it can be hard to know what you want to spend your time doing. The trick is trying to plan something you’re going to look forward to! PS For a fast loan options, click on the link.

With extra time comes more energy to catch up on some of those things your busy life has caused you to avoid. Could it finally be time to sit down and reach out to old friends? Give them a call or send out some postcards. I’m sure they’d love to hear from you!

Is there a community project or event happening in your area looking for some extra support? Giving back to your community by either volunteering or simply attending can allow you to reconnect with your neighbours and leave you with a wholesome balance to your life.

Staying close to home

If you’re lucky enough to call Brisbane home, then we’ve whittled down some of the best activities on offer in and around the South East Queensland area for you to check out.

Spend the morning at Mount Coot-tha and the Botanical Gardens

Explore Mount Coot-Tha forest on one of the 70 walking tracks clearly marked around the mountain. Enjoy a chorus of birds and other wild animals there to accompany you along the way. Trails are designed for all ages and abilities and are fitted with hydration stations and quiet sheltered areas to take breaks when you need. Check out the look-out at the summit of Mount Coot-Tha (accessible from the road) which boasts beautiful 360-degree views of Brisbane. The scenic cafe/restaurant at the top serves delicious food and drinks and is a perfect place to refuel before cracking on with the day.

Cuddle a koala and get to know other Aussie animals

Just 10 minutes from Mount Coot-Tha you can find the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, home to 130 koalas. Connect emotionally with the happy, healthy animals and learn from the friendly enlightened staff ready to help with any of your questions. For more information on the animals, keeper presentations and prices, visit their website here.

Grab some lunch

Brisbane’s multicultural array of cuisine can sometimes feel like too much to choose from. To make your life easier, here are some of our favourites:

  • EAT Street, Northshore
  • Wandering Cooks, West End
  • Brisbane Brewing Co., West End
  • Mrs Luu’s, Milton (Vietnamese)
  • Salts Meats Cheese (cooking classes also available)
  • Wagaya, Fortitude Valley (Japanese)

Take the CityCat

Hop on the Brisbane River ferry and ride down to Southbank station. There you can walk off your lunch down the promenade and wander around the calming art galleries. The popular galleries are frequently updated with pieces coming from both local and international artists.

Host a picnic!

Breath in the fresh air, eat deliciously and laugh along with friends. What more could you want out of your free day off? Skip the Netflix binge and head on out to soak in nature and delight on your loved ones.

Bring along the picnic rug and some chairs if you want to avoid a trip to the chiropractor and make sure to pack sunscreen!

Relax and unwind at the movies

Sometimes when we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life we forget about the simple luxuries such as going to the good old movies. You could go to a cinema in the city or even at your local shopping mall. Why not sign up online to Cinebuzz and get your Event movie tickets for discounted prices every day of the week! Or, if you want, there are some quirky little theatres around Brisbane. These are the old-fashioned cinemas that are full of character and give you a different experience than the modern movie theatre. Head to New Farm Cinemas which have been revived to their former glory. Or if you loved the idea of a drive-in cinema of the 70’s you can have that experience yourself at the Yatala drive-in cinema.

Go for a hike

Hit the trails for a day’s worth of adventure and heart pumping. The climb to the top may be tough, but the view will be well worth the sweat. Choose a trail nearby and make sure to pack plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen!

Happy hour is our favourite hour!

Are you up for a few laughs this long weekend? Why not head down to your local comedy club and see who’s playing! Up and coming comedians perform at local venues to gain some experience and following. Some are always better than others, but that’s part of the fun. One great comedy venue is the Sitdown Comedy Club in Paddington or check out Brisbane Powerhouse, who specialise in all things funny every Friday night.

Learn something new

Dedicate a few hours of your free day off to learn a new skill or something new about your country or heritage. Take refuge in the aircon of the library and dive into a world of books, and come out a wiser person. Sounds like a great way to spend a day!

Looking to get out of Brisbane?

Wake up to the sounds of nature

If you love to experience the great outdoors, why not do a weekend family camping trip? Camping is easily affordable for a family with loads of things for the kids to do! Download the app CamperMate to help you choose one of the many holiday parks and campsites scattered all over the Aussie outbacks.

Take in a stunning new view

Enjoy breathtaking views on top of the Glass House Mountains. If you head up towards the sunshine coast, you’ll stumble upon some of Queensland’s most beautiful mountains, which are in fact the remnants of volcanic activity that happened around 26 -27 million years ago. You can spend the day hiking up the mountains and check out the beautiful view these rolling hills have to offer. They even have some nice eco-lodges if you’d like to spend the night there.

Something for adrenalin junkies

South East Queensland is known for its theme parks. This is also a huge drawcard for tourism. There’s Warner Brothers Movie World for the movie lovers. Dreamworld for the thrillseekers and adrenaline junkies. Seaworld for the animal lovers. As well as, Wet ‘n’ Wild for the child in us all. You can get an all-around pass and go to all 4, otherwise, just show up at your favourite one and buy your ticket at the gate. However, sometimes you can find cheap tickets if you shop around online.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you may want to try to learn something completely new like rock climbing. It’s a great way to declutter your mind from the stress of work and requires problem-solving skills, upper body strength and good balance to conquer the wall.

Not extreme enough? How does jumping out of a plane sound? Check out the Byron Bay Skydive for more on offers and prices.

One more important thing to remember:

Long weekends are also a time to relax and enjoy some downtime. Binge a new series on Netflix, take lots of naps and do your best to stay off your emails. Your body and mind need it!
